A novena is nine days of devotional prayer. It recalls the time of prayer observed by Mary, the Apostles, and other Disciples of Jesus between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday. These nine days before the gift of the Spirit set the tradition for a novena of special prayer.
The image of the Infant of Prague was made by an old Spanish monk who received a vision from the Christ child. It was said to have passed into the hands of Saint Theresa of Avila where according to an old family tradition, it became a wedding gift from the blessed saint to a Bohemian nobleman which then was offered to the Carmelites of Prague.
